Chatani’s “Popup Crane”

By: CHATANI Masahiro

Published in: Origamic Architecture of Masahiro Chatani by CHATANI Masahiro, ISBN 4395270115

Why:

This isn’t quite origami, but it’s a neat effect. With suitable cuts and some cleverly placed folds, you get a popup shape reminscent of the classic origami crane. This book is part of the (seemingly infinite) series by Chatani on popup shapes for use in cards and the like.

This one’s a bit unusual in that it relies on the extra folded valley in the center to provide the “pop” – while you can fold this in half, completely flat, you cannot glue it to a backing card. But it’s still very cool.
